List of galvanised parts/panels on a facelift
« on: 28 January 2008, 10:51:58 »

Does anyone have any idea what panels or parts on a facelift Omega are galvanised?

I've got rust spots on places I would have thought would have been galvanised, but are obviously not. The rear bootm cross members, bottom of the doors, rear wheel arch lips  :o on a car that is %75 galvanised??? Maybe they were talking about the rubber and plastic on the car?

unusual for Omega's to rust on the arches.

I have a 2000 model facelift which is galvanised,  have 1 tiny spot of rust smaller than a 5p coin, on the passenger door, in the far bottom right corner. Thats it.

Most outer-pannels are galvanised i think  :-/

Most panels are galvanised.

But, remember that galvanising is only a coating and get be chipped through.

Plus any repair work rarely gives the same level of galv protection.

I believe some of the old MK3 & MK4 golfs were galvanised as well but most of them have rotted their way to the scrappy.

As Tunnie says, unusual for the facelifts to get rusty arches? I wonder if it's had a scrape at some point and been repaired. Rear arches are the hardest part to get right and inevitably, even if resprayed, will start to show through.

I'd say it was well worth getting sorted though. It looks unsightly to my eyes and you'd be surprised how little it would cost to put it right. We had both rear arches done on our 2001 astra by a local guy, looks absolutely spot on, can't just remember how much, around £200 with a couple of other bits and bobs.

When I first got the car a year ago I noticed that the rear wheel arch lips were starting to get rusty and bubbled. I got them repaired by a local guy but the guy should have been wearing a mask and riding a horse since he rushed the job. So needless to say it needs to be done again.  :o

I'm a bit disappointed that the car has rust though. I thought I would have been clear of this problem when I got rid of my Ford Orion. Now it looks like I need to spend more of my hard earned cash getting it fixed  :(

Stick with it mate, it may be worth going back to see Dick Turpin again and tell him that the repair, even though perhaps a year old hasn't really been done satisfactorily? Don't fall out with him, it's difficult to get right, it may be that you can come to some arrangement and he will spend a little more time on getting it right this time?

Alternatively, go somewhere else! It will be worth updating your profile with location and model etc so people can advise better  :y
