Firstly, do you experience coolant loss?

Just had my HBV replaced.

Symptom was loss of coolant when engine running.  Coolant was lost onto the floor directly under centre of the engine compartment where the near side wiper arm is attached.

Losing about two litres over less than two miles!

Lots of steam coming from under the bonnet in the same location once the engine had warmed up.  Lots of swearing and shouting also followed.

But nice feeling when it was sorted for just forty quid (allbeit jubilee clips should not have been replaced)!   :-[

HBV is a possibility, i would feel around the unit for wetness.

Mayo in the filler neck is possibly due to doing short trips in the car, there have been a few people recently reporting this and given the cold as well the filler neck may not be getting as hot as the engine and have some moisture in it, hence the mayo

Mayo has nothing to do with HBV.   Unless you see it on the dip stick its almost certainly not a problem.   Go for a blast down the mway and it will probably disappear.

If the HBV area is not wet, the marks could be from a previous leak which was fixed?    You can try fiddling with the heater controls and AC on/off as this can affect whether it leaks or not.    In my (3x) experience, they tend to go big time, so no doubt about coolant loss.   If there is any sign of damp around it, best to change it soonest as when it goes it could dump your coolant very quickly.

I have just replaced the HBV in my Omega only to find the leak was from one of the pipes leading to the HBV.

My advice (for what it's worth ;)) is  to thoroughly check the pipes at the same time. My leaks were very hard to spot as was buried right at the back of the plenum. Only by studious observation over about 20 minutes at various rev settings did I manage to spot it.

Good luck

FWIW, my leaking HBV caused a loss of about 2L of coolant per 300 miles (topped up when warning appeared on MID). Replaced about 1,000 miles ago and no movement in water level sice :)

BTW, it is absolutely vital you top up with an average of 50% antifreeze. Even if that's 2 top ups of neat water followed by 2 of neat antifreeze (if you're a bit tardy like me).
