Car conking out whilst stationery in drive!
« on: 20 February 2008, 17:48:29 »

Hi

I know I've been peppering these forums with stuff lately but this is really embarrassing! Every time I'm braking to stop in traffic, the car kangaroos to a halt - with the revs jumping between 500-1500 rpm (like its fighting the urge to stall). Then just as its time to pull away....it cuts out. Cue embarrassing 10secs traffic jam behind me whilst I shift the gearstick to park, start the car and whizz off red-faced. Do you reckon this will be cured by a can of carb spray in the throttle body or is it likely to be something else? Seems to be behaving like its cold all the time.

Or is it just me being an automatic transmission/Omega n00b?  :-[

Sounds like you need to clean the IACV first.
If not try to find an airleak using your carb cleaner.

Pretty much standard response to this query is:

1) Check your EML light works. When sure, carry out a 'Paperclip Test'
IAW the following link. As you have a '98 4 pot, I would expect 4
digit codes, not 2 digit. 10 flashes will equal 0 (zero)
Do your test with ignition on but engine NOT running.
    Post up any codes.

2) Do a breather jet check and clean your breathers and IACV
IAW the following link. Be sure to buy a new IACV gasket.
They are only peanuts to buy.

Righto..will do. Cheers. Knew I'd be doing that paperclip test soon enough! Car showing 'automatic gearbox' from time to time too, seen the other thread about it and awaiting a response. No probs shifting gears or on sport mode, just deceleration and strange idling!

Here goes...

Here goes...

You often get this if the car tries to stall and recovers without stalling.
The road speed and engine speed goes rapidly in and out of the
operating envelope as the engine revs dive up and down as it tries to
stall. ECU registers it as outside operating limits, reckons it's a fault,
and sticks it into manual mode only.

Computers aren't sentient, they're basically just a collection of
AND/OR gates. We haven't quite reached the 'I Robot' stage yet.  :)
Human brains will still be making the decisions for a little while yet.
