I think I have the same problem. There is a burn-off of oil on starting after an overnight rest, which appears about 3 to 5 seconds after start up and disappears altogether after a further 3 to 5 seconds, not to appear again until after another lengthy rest.
KCL from Finland posted, on a previous thread of mine about this, that it is not unknown on the 2.6l because of the stem seal design. I've accepted that I'm going to have to take the heads off and do the work eventually, for fear of ruining the cats.
However, my 2.6l failed the MOT yesterday on emissions only, and the RPM, CO & HC readings on two fast idle tests were well inside the max. limit. The Lamda readings were 1.092 and 1.095 against a max. limit of 1.030 and the tester assured me that this was due to holes in both the centre pipe sections, which he showed to me, giving a too high oxygen reading. He is going to do a free re-test when the 2 centre and the rear boxes have been replaced, (they were all pretty shot), and out of interest I have posted the TC prices I have been quoted in a separate thread. Incidentally, he is happy to fit my own TC parts for £35, which I think is very reasonable.
So, it would appear that the minimal oil burning problem has not affected the cat. operation for the moment, and unless one of our experts tells me otherwise, I'm going to wait a little longer before tackling this pretty major job myself.
It will be interesting to exchange notes on any further developments, which I shall post as when they occur.
