Help ! - Clutch Problem ??
« on: 03 April 2008, 20:29:35 »

I was driving home tonight when my clutch pedal went.. it is very loose to press down with little resistance. I cannot put the car into gear with the engine running. I can when it is off tho and it does jerk forward when started in first gear.

Any Ideas on what has gone wrong? How to fix and an estimate of what a Vauxhall dealer would charge to fix the problem...

thanks in advance for any help..

Sounds like a failure in the hydraulic system or the springs in the pressure plate have collapsed. Have a look for any signs of fluid level drop or leakage as a first step.

Access is the problem if it's something inside the bellhousing. Gearbox will have to be dropped to get at it. Just time consuming if DIY, but could get expensive if not.

Have a look for obvious things first though. Could be master cylinder or just a split pipe I suppose.

I dont really know on the manual Omegas as I have only had autos...

But if its got a hydrolic clutch unit behind the clutch pedal then it could be leaking...if it had failed completely then the pedal would be right to the floor and wouldnt lift up, no resistance at all...But if so probably a closed unit about £100 or so...

If its not hydraulic then I dont really know but probably similar...

The hydurulic slave cylinder is not inside the car near the pedal, it is located inside the gearbox bell housing, so needs the box removed to get acsess to it. my guess is that the slave has gone and therefore no pedal, or as already said the clutch springs have collapsed, and will need a clutch kit fitted. While your there it might be prudent to replace the slave at the same time, but that will depend on finances of course.

Check the basics first...

Has the level dropped in the brake fluid reservoir?
Any sign of hydraulic fluid in the footwell or around the bottom of the bell housing or around the metal-rubber pipe coupling just behind the drivers side cylinder head?
Remove the cardboard panel from above drivers feet and check that the clutch pedal is still connected to the master cylinder push rod. Is there any sign of a fluid leak here?

Note that the V6 has a spring built into the pedal assembly which will hold the pedal on the floor if there is no hydraulic pressure to force it back up again.

The Clutch pedal is returning back up.. it is not staying on the floor..
Does this mean it isnt a hydraulic failure ???

Still looking at box out to check for fluid loss if not obvious or clutch plate failure.

This means that there is some pressure in the system. Try bleeding it to see what happens.
You havnt posted results to earlier suggestions....any sign of fluid loss etc??
