abs ecu gone pop
« on: 23 May 2008, 22:53:26 »

mate of a mate got face lift 2 litre cdx 99 MANUAL from auction for 1250. Phew minor probs. to get it through Mot rear shocks n stuff, nowt major. But then alarm started going off in middle of night so he started disconnecting battery every night. Said to him about bonnet switch and disarming the interior to see if it helped. Alarm still playing up but now the abs light is on. Its been on a snap on diagnostic, abs ecu failed. I have seen the guide on replacement (cringed) but any body got advice re price, new or breaker? Will one from a pre face lift model work or is abs module model specific?
And is the snap on diagnostic going to give correct info, should it be trusted? Or does it have to be tech 2?
Oh and we tried to flash the codes out by holding down break/gas pedal then turning on ignition as new guide(for an auto, this in a manual) but managment light barely flickers, twice we think. Works on my 3.2 auto constant flashing no codes(?) Anyway, i was suprised to see face lift with 99 plate. I thought they started in 2000. Is there any cross over between a and b omega with parts/ecu? Paper clip no work either!  Er... yeah, i think thats every thing?

Give bba-reman a ring on 01634 230055, they repaired my ABS ECU very quickly and at a very reasonable cost ... talk to them .. it costs nothing to get the accurate information

Paperclip test should definitely work on this car - so either the EML is not working or you've shorted the wrong pins.  Here's the guide from topbuzz...

I assume your diagnostic plug is the 16 pin one mentioned in figure 8.  Short pins 5 and 6 (counting from the top to bottom on the right hand side of the diagnostic socket).

Or this one that is more accurate ;)

I purposely put the topbuzz guide up and not the forum one because on my 2.0 litre it is definitely pins 5 and 6 that flash the codes not 4 and 6.  I have a feeling Chris' may be the same since he has tried it already and it has not worked.

Pins 4 and 5 should be connected in the loom anyway, so shouldn't actually make a difference :)

You're right enough I checked mine today with pins 4 and 6 - both combinations flash the codes!   :y

The paperclip test will only flash engine codes, though, and unless I've misread the problem is with the ABS.

My understanding is that the normal symptoms of a total failure of the ABS ECU include the speedo and speed sensitive power steering going wrong.

I think you need to get hold of a cheapo or real TECH 2 and read the codes from the ABS. It could be as simple as a bad connection on one of the wheel sensors.

He mentioned he tried to flash the codes by pressing the accelerator and brake pedals, so just letting him know that doesn't work for this model but he can flash them with the paperclip test.

Have I just read right that this is a 1999 facelift model - mabye the reason you can't flash the codes.  If it is a facelift model you need a cheapo or real tech 2 to read the codes as Kevin says.  Worth buying since the ABS light is on.

If it's a 2.0 it should be OK with a paperclip. The paperclip test disappeared with the 2.2 I think.

It may well be that there are no fault codes stored in the engine ECU. You will need a cheapo tech 2 or real tech 2 to check the ABS system for codes as this certainly isn't paperclip - able. I think you should do this before going to the cost of refurbishment, just in case it's a simple problem.

It did and the 2.6/3.2 also  ;)

Trying to flash the codes will only give engine ecu codes and not the abs ecu codes.

You will need real tech2 or cheapo tech2 for that, tho im not gonna say a cheapo tech2 will read the abs ecu on a 2.0, it may or may not.

A cheapo tech2 does work on my 2.2 abs ecu.......but it may depend on firmware level of abs ecu.......ie my cheapo tech2 could read my autobox ecu initially, then it was upgraded to lastest firmware and now it wont!  :(

Tho you say its had a snapon diagnostic on it........i use one of those now and then.....and its pretty good.....so i would tend to believe it.....tho on the one i use it tells what the code is as well as the description......so assuming they are all much the same and it does indeed tell the code as well.......perhaps i would just double check the code  :y
