Traction Control Not Working
« on: 02 May 2008, 15:55:48 »

Hi All,

Some help please - fitted a new battery a couple of weeks ago, and since then the traction control doesn't work - i.e. the TC light on the dash doesn't come on for a few seconds when the ignition is turned on, the light just stays off.  Checked the fuse, it's not blown.  I'm certain it's not just the light that's faulty - when TC is working it can be quite intrusive, so I'm convinced it's off.  Not a huge problem as I kept TC switched off for 98% of the time anyway, but would be nice to have it back just in case.  Anyone have any ideas what might be causing it?  Thanks.

Agreed it may well be the dash bulb blown...have you tried pressing the TC switch to see a) if the light goes on and off on that and b) if TC disengages as it should?

Pressing the button doesn't do anything since the problem started...and TC is definately not working - it cuts in way too early for my liking when it's functioning, and that isn't happening anymore.

When you are saying that the TC 'cuts in way too early', presumably the TC does not actually come-on on the instrument panel (which it should do)? If so then your TC is working, but both the bulb and the on/off switch do not...? I would defintely take off the instrument panel (easy job - see maintenance guides section) and check that bulb as first step.

No, what I meant was that back when the TC functioned (i.e. before it broke) it seemed to have been designed/engineered for lead-footed numpties - i.e. it cut the power and applied the brakes even when traction wasn't an issue for me.  A good driver can take the throttle right to the point where the tyres are about to start slipping (but haven't yet) for maximum acceleration, whereas the TC would stop the fun some 5% before that.

Now that it's busted, it doesn't cut in at all; so its definately not a bulb issue.

I agree. If you recall how you8 broke it can you let me know please?

I'm surprised the TC and ABS lights aren't on, TBH.

Does ABS still work? If you find a quiet bit of road and stand on the brakes can you feel it modulating through the pedal?

Only think I can think of is that whatever signal goes to the engine ECU to reduce torque during TC operation has come adrift.  :-/

It'd be well worth checking the engine and ABS/TC ECUs for trouble codes, I reckon.

The ECU should leave the light(s) on if it fails, that's the odd thing.
