Just wanted to update you on how I got on in the end with this problem.  

I finally got around to fitting a new MAF sensor today and it seems to be driving a lot better now.  I have not gone very far on the test drive but I have noticed improved throttle response and slightly quicker acceleration.

I am going for a longer drive this evening so I will know better afer that if the problem has been resolved.

I will let you know how it goes!
