Dear all

Firstly thanks for a great site, this really helped me last year when refitting the cambelt and rebuilding the heads after tensioner failure!!!

However since I carried this out it appears I had the wrong sort of Cam cover seals supplied (thin ones?) that have subsequently leaked oil both into the spark plug recesses and all over the sides of the engine and exhausts (lots of smoke etc!!)

I cleaned this all up and changed these gasket seals last weekend (including small dabs of sealant front and back) and all was well.  The engine went back together well with no starting or ECU issues.........

However there was still some smoke which I believe was the residual burning off (this seems to be improving) and after a few runs i found the car would not start.  I tried combinations of locking/unlocking, wiggling under bonnet connectors etc, but the car just turned over.  It eventually fired and drove home ok, no problems.

Last night I cleaned underneath the engine and also took out the crank sensor (it was coated in oil).  

So questions:
- Would an oily crank sensor cause non starting???
- Is it worth doing a paper clip test to determine what may be the fault?

Definitely worth doing a paperclip test especially if the sensor was soaked in oil.  Did you clean/dry the plug wells?  The oil on the spark plugs won't help and there is a possibility the leads have now been fryed.
