Oil Level Warning on Display
« on: 17 June 2008, 08:08:31 »

Hi there
I have a 2.5 Elite Estate on a R plate, covered 150k.  The car has a full service history.  I check my oil weekly and it never loses any.  Recently whilst travelling on the motorway travelling @ 65ish, the 'Check Oil Level' warning came on the display.  It stays on for approx 5 miles then goes off.
Would this be an oil pump problem, or oil pressure switch, or something completley different.

Thanks in advance.

There's a level switch in the base of the steel sump. That would be my first check. When I replaced my sump pan, the wiring to this switch was quite hard & one of my connections broke & had to be re-soldered before I put it back. You could have the same/similar problem.

The oil level sensor is at the bottom of the sump, on the inside, as are the wires. So you can't see anything just by looking under the car....

It does sound as if the sensor is playing-up, though if you are happy that the oil level is correct I wouldn't worry about it, it is probably not worth taking the sump off just for this.

The only other worry is if the sensor isn't working properly because it is covered in muck due to infrequent oil changes in the past, in which case it might be worth taking off the sump and giving it a good clean on the inside....
