power surge problems again-can anyone help?
« on: 15 August 2008, 20:52:19 »

Hi,
I wrote some time ago about a mate with a 2.0lt auto-a facelift V plate-who kept getting powersurges, mostly when underload. The consensus seemed to be to get the breather pipes cleaned out and sure enough they were more than just a bit clogged and things got a lot better. A couple of months on and he's got the same symptoms again ,with the car seeming to jump gears .He's taken it to a local garage who've told him that the gearbox itself is ok (aparantly the onboard computer is coming up with auto gearbox fault) but that there is a switch on top of the box that is faulty and will cost about £256,BUT they cant guarantee that replacing this switch will cure the problem! Can anyone confirm that this seems the likely cause?
                                  Thanks guys/girls

I had a Cosworth Scorpio (Sorry!) before my current car (MV6 Auto) and this was a common problem. It turned out to be the MAF sensor being clogged with deposits from the air intake. Because these sensors are so delicate (A couple of hair widths) you must not touch them with your fingers. It is recommended that you spray them with Carb cleaner and gently blast the gunk away. It sends info to the gearbox and sends it all doo-lally thinking it needs to be in all sorts of drive modes. It worked for me. Hope this helps. If not - could be gearbox oil needs replacing.

I presume by power surges you mean the auto box is changeing down for no reason? Or the revs are  going up for no reason, air leak style? And when under load do you mean foot to the floor or just following miss daisy?  Sorry, bit more detail me thinks...  :-/

At about 60mph, mine keeps surging between 4th and Lockup 4th gear under medium load when really warm.  I know mine's well overdue an oil change - does it go away if a bit more throttle is applied (not kickdown)?  Only ask because mine sorts itself out..

Having not been in the car myself when its been doing it, its a bit difficult to give a lot more detail but he tells me that, whilst most of the time it drives ok the problem is getting worse. For example, he might be doing just a steady 40-50 and the revs suddenly jump up or he might even be braking to slow down and the revs suddenly surge. The car is otherwise in very good nick but having paid £600 for it I dont think he's too keen to spend £256 +labour on something that may or may not cure it, much as he loves it so any ideas that you guys might have would be much appreciated!
