Steering problem constant minor ajustments
« on: 06 September 2008, 17:05:06 »

This has been annoying me for the last 8 months and I'm not sure what to try next....

When driving in a straight line every few seconds I find I have to make a minor adjustment with the steering. These are tiny adjustments to keep it straight but after a while it gets very annoying. I also find it difficult to follow a clean line around a corner, it just doesnt seem to go quite where I point it and again I have adjust the line mid way through the corner.

So far I've had new wishbones and a full geo alignment by WIM but neither made any difference. ALso have new tyres all round and had the wheels swapped around when they were fitted.

Could this be a knackered idler bar or something more serious ?

Any advice welcome !

Cheers

I had this, replaced everything - idler, wishbones, droplinks, geometry setups...

I think I've nailed it on mine, was due to some problems with the self levelling rear suspension seals (one was pumped up higher than the other)

Get a tape measure and one level ground, check the height from the floor to the wheel arch lip on each corner

You need to adjust your steering box, it's an easy job.

I tried driving the slack out of the steering box and the problem remained....

Hi,
I would have thought that WIM would have picked up on any problem with wishbones, or idlers or play in steering box.

I don't know how relative it is to your problem, but some years ago, I used to drive a Renault minibus that had a very similar problem. it got so bad that none of the other voluntary drivers would drive it so they put it into garage for repair. It came back with a new set of front shocks and problem solved. I don't think they did anything else to it.

Frankly in my experience the stearing on the mig is not the most accurate tbh, but it sounds like it should be better than that. Have a search re stearing idler its been well covered on here.

ck the rear donut bushes, if the steering has al been done and its small constant corrections the rear axle could be moving slightly with worn bushes this will make you keep correcting the steering to compensate!! :y
