Very unlikely to be an ECU failure.

Ooh, here we go! You will need a more experienced owner than me, but the very knowledgeable senior members on here will say, ECU failure is "almost" unheard of. Been on here a while now and only seen one! So, was yours diagnosed by tech 2 and by an operator who knows what he is doing? If no to either of these i would suggest you be very sceptical of that info. What codes did you get and what exactly where you told and by who?

The only real thing to do is check the atf level, or service is every 60k with dexron 3 only. Unless youve already done it, it wont hurt and is likely over due, maybe?

Send The Boy a pm. I had 3 diff. Codes from 3 diff diagnostic machines at 2 garages on a polo with tick over problems, but not on a proper vw diagnostic which no doubt would have given another code again.
Basically you need a proper vx tech 2 diagnostic   computer and an operator who knows how to use it. Vx dealers have it but dont know how to use it and charge to much.
The Boy is your Man! If you can get it to  Brakley.

Depending where you are in Brum, either Marks DTM Calib (south Nottingham) or I (Brackley) are nearest :)
