Auto box stuck in one gear
« on: 28 September 2008, 11:56:38 »

Hi
My son has had aOmega 2.0 16V given him with blown Head gasket. Him and a friend took head off had it skimmed and put back together but he's lost interest in it so I'm trying to put it on the road for the wife in the winter. It stuttered on tick over and engine man light came on and off intermittantly and is a bit rattly at top so I took off throttle housing as shown by one of the members replaced gaskets etc and that seems to have fixed that.  Took rocker cover and fixed oil leak at back from the two lobes. All Ok.
Took it out yesterday just around the block as am going to take it for MOT The auto gearbox sport light would not come on and engine seemed stuck in 3 rd gear all the time. It went into drive reverse and out again no problem.I stopped it thinking gearbox problem now. Started it again and the sport light came on and off ok so took it around the block again and all seemed ok-Strange

Anybody any ideas what this could be-It has been stood in the garage two months?

dodgy snow mode switch? Star shaped button left of stick. It makes the car pull away in 3rd so as not to spin the wheels in snow/ice. Maybe.

sounds like box is in limp home - possibly because engine mgmt has a problem, so paperclip that first

my god this sounds familiar!, as somebody else has asked,,,is the auto box check lit before it is started? if youve been thrashing about under the bonnet check the blue plug & socket by the battery [middle one of the 3], my one had the same problem & it shocked everybody to be told it was the g/box ecu :o, a tech 2 test will help as long as the person using it knows how to decipher the info, there are so many questions i could ask as indeed were asked to me by others, there is a fuse in the fusebox that has something to do with the gearbox [no10 i think] so might be worth looking at, but im not going to say its the g/box ecu just because mine was!, but as TB says go through the paperclip test first as if its due to something on the engine complaining it dont feel well then it could be that easy,,,good luck :y

i had this problem on a car i bought a couple of years ago, turned out to be the fuse for the auto box,and a garage had told the guy i bought it from it was gonna cost £1100 to fix it,hence i got it for 250.

chip - are you near any member with a decent code reader? Fill out your location, then people nearby may be able to check gearbox codes for you

Sorry, forgot. No 'auto gearbox' did not come up on display I take you mean the display to the right of dash operated by stork control on right of steering wheel
As i say it righted itself when I re started car as soon as the star for the sport made became operational again

Ah, guess you are not in UK then ;D

Is the display a TID (Radio, time and temp only), or a MID/GID/CID (full fuel computer setup).

If a TID, it won't come up on display, but as a warning light below it (is bulb ok).

If MID/GID/CID, is it original display, or has it been changed (might not be programmed for autobox)
