Started car this morning, making a horrible noise
« on: 28 September 2008, 18:13:46 »

I got in the car this morning started it and at different times apart, usually around 2 to 5 seconds there is this sort or grinding, scratching, hissing noise (sounds like the noise when you squirt an aerosol can into its lid)
any ideas please?

as said...probably find the noise is coming from just behind the passengers side corner of your front bumper...SAI (Secondary Air Injuction) pump

There is a multiplug under the nearside/kerside wing.  Simply unplug it to disconnect the SAI pump and thus stop the noise.  It serves no great purpose, other than to allow the cats to get to efficient operating temperature quicker, thereby allowing GM to quote better consumption figures.

If you are happy with using an excess teaspoonfull or so of fuel on startup, save your cash and ignore the pump....   :y

Its not fuel, its emissions, by getting cats up to temp faster.

But no harm in disconnecting :) - later omegas don't have it anyway.

I understood that if cats were at temp then less fuel was fed in, hence the teaspoonsul of fuel bit?   :-/

Dead easy to remove, three bolts and a couple of connectors. The horns come off with it though so you need to mount them on a convenient bit of metal behind the bumper with a couple of holes in it.

You can also remove the black plastic assembly and rubber pipe and metal pipe and one-way valve in the engine bay, just follow the pipework up from the pump. I plugged up the pipes coming off the manifold with a couple of spark plugs where the metal pipe used to be. Can't tell unless you get your head in there and it makes getting the timing cover off that bit easier!
