What order should I do these Jobs?
« on: 23 November 2008, 21:46:27 »

I have to do the following jobs on my miggy in next couple of weeks :-

   1) Replace spark Plugs
   2) Clean Breathers
   3) Oil + filter change
   4) As I have an oil leak I think the cam cover gaskets are leaking but  I'm not 100% sure so will have to investigate.

My problem is, as I have not worked on this engine before I'm not sure in which order I should do these jobs so as not to waste time, energy & money - I'm also not sure how long it will take me and wether I should do them all in 1 go or do piecemeal so any advice would be appreciated.

Please bear in mind that I have only 2 speeds at working i.e. dead slow and stop (bit like an Iraqi tank with 3 gears - 2 reverse gears and 1 forward gear in case of attack from behind ;D).

To get an idea of how fast I work I recently changed rear pads & discs & changed brake fluid - it took me 2.5 DAYS - the guy who did the maintenance guide can do it in 2 hours :-[ anyway my excuse is I'm old & bold and full of a cold  ;D(haven't I read that somewhere else).

Cheers

Very easy actually - all at the same time.

Well not quite

Buy the cam cover seals and plugs, dismantle the top, and do the gaskets, now clean out the oil and change the plugs, now you can clean the breathers (all while sealer is drying), then put plenum back on.

Now jack up and drain the oil, and change filter

If a few hours have passed since fitting the covers refill with oil.

Need plenum off to do cam covers - need to dismantle plenum to do breathers, need to lift cable harness to do cam covers and plugs.

After all the cleaning - rubbish in oil so change it.

Saturday working slowly will get covers refitted, then leave of road and finish on Sunday morning.

4) first, if you have to do cam cover gaskits, do the rest as you rebuild it, do the oil when you get a spare half hour :y

Thanks guys for the advice - just a small supplementary question - how long does the black sealant take to "cure" properly (6, 12, 24 hours?) as I wouldn't want another oil leak :y

Doesn't take long mate by the time you have fitted the cam cover gaskets, cleaned out the breathers, (plus if you are using carb cleaner to clean out the breather box at the back of the drivers side head, it is best to change the oil after anyway) refitted everything should be fine to start up  :y
