I'm right in the middle of fitting a new timing belt - following the DVD evry step of the way.

When it comes to fitting the belt to cams 3 & 4, i've found that the slignment mark on the belt fits perfectly on the sprocket for 3, but the alignment mark for 4 is one tooth short.

Here's some pictures:

I've checked with the Alignment tools, and cam 3 is slightly retarded, and cam 4 is slightly advanced. as a result, I can line up the marking on 3 just fine, but 4 is one tooth short with a slack belt. I cannot pull the belt tight enough to get it to line up!

So, in short, how do I bring cam 4 back a touch to line it up? is it simply a case of slackening off the sprocket bolt and rotating it slightly? What's the torque value to tighten it back up?

it's a case of putting the belt on half a tooth out retarded and then using the adjusters (there should be a little bit of slack between cams 3 and cams 4 so that you can use the adjusters if this makes sense)

Right....insert a flat blade screw driver betweenthe belt on cam three and the rear backing plate.

Now remove the lower idler (bottom right) and move the belt over cam 4 by one tooth.

Sometimes you need to move the cams slightly with the locing tool still fitted to make it easier.

Once you have done the above.....move the screw driver to hold the belt on for cam 4 and re-fit the lower idler

I'd understand about putting the belt on half a tooth out, but it would only be out for cam four - so as a result there would always be slack between the cams - too much slack, I think!

Would this mean that cam 4 would always be advanced related to cam 3?

As per my answer above....the belt should be tight between cam 3 and 4....there is currently quite a bit of slack in it so move the belt over a tooth on cam 4

thanks, mark - I left the locking tool in place, wedged the belt in place on cam3 with a screwdriver, and shimmied the belt onto cam 4 in the right position by sheer will and a tiny turn of the cam.
