Engine change disaster!!!
« on: 09 December 2008, 11:36:26 »

HELP ME!!

I just changed the engine in my 1999 2.0 due to a slight misunderstanding between the crankshaft and the big end, resulting in a large hole in the block!!

Anyway fired up the new engine the other day and now it sounds like somebody put diesel in it. Seems like its running on 2-3 cylinders. And there's a strong smell of petrol (from down the road!)

Coil pack and leads are from old engine and working fine. Papercliped it and it threw up Crank sensor and oxygen sensor. Can anyone tell me what to do? I'm no good with electrics only mechanics.

Got rid of the pic but say it again to be sure!

Crank sensor between PAS pump and aircon compressor. Make sure connector and cabling OK. O2 (lambda) sensor on front part of exhaust. Might need a good blast down motorway after checking those connections as well. :y

Ok, I've gotten round to changing the sensors. Still misfiring on 1 and 3, so changed the injectors, still no joy  :-/. Threw in the towel and got a vauxhall mechanic to look at it on the side.

Anyway he pressure checked it and found low pressure on 3 cylinders >:(. He says it could be valves or piston rings. Is there anything else that would result in low pressure? It sounds desperate but im actually hoping its the head gasket!

Should I start thinking about a box of matches :'(

what age of car did the replacement engine come from? if it was pre 97 then there are differences in sensors an some of the plumbing.

easiest way to tell at first glance is if the engine has a 1 piece or 2 piece sump, 2 piece is post 97.

was irt just the bare engine you changed? or did you use the sensors and dis pak etc from the repalcement engine?

there is the chance tho that the engine you got is a duffer, was there any guarantee with it?

It was just the bare block that i changed. Bought it from Megavaux in Nottingham.

They say if i get it back to the in 60 days the will change it but as i live in Dublin the would mean nearly £300 shipping costs.

megavaux have a pretty good rep, but i know what you mean about shiping costs. you could maybe see if they could meet you half way. or get them to organise the courier, they get discounts for using the same courier for everything.

if you have checked all the obvious like cam sensor, crank sensor, dis pak, leads etc then it is possible the HG is away. you would need to get it confirmed before you go taking the head off, as changing the gasket to find it still runs like poo is gonna sicken you even more.

I've checked sparks, changed crank sensor, injectors and new plugs.

Megavaux say that the engine had 55k on it. And i dont understand how an engine with that milage on it could have worn rings :-?

And to talk about it being sickening, this is my first car ever!! I hope this isn't a trend  :-/.

Seems to smoke a small bit intermitantly but with a slight smell of petrol.

Small bit of mayo in the breather pipe, but i might be wrong in thinking that it's just from the engine sitting.

How do i check for pressure in the crankcase?

mayo, is normally from short jorneys, -condensation, or HG, take the oil cap off, with engine running, ,or pipe at top of cam cover( not to sure where on 2 lts) and see how much pressure is there, will be some but nothing extreme

Took the breather of the cam cover and there is a bit of pressure. But not enough to push my finger out, felt more like me breathing through a straw very slowly.
