Radiator flush
« on: 18 December 2008, 13:05:53 »

What is the most thorough means to flush the rad?

I have flushed with water with the rad in situ - ie drain through red tap, top up expansion tank, run a bit and repeat.   The water runs clear - no crap whatsoever.

Is it worth removing the rad when I do my cambelt/waterpump and are there any potions worth using?

Surely top and bottom hose off, then lots of water hosepiped through, one way then the other.  Kitchen tap on full bore through the hose.  That's what I'd do, if I wanted to be thorough.

Like the heater matrix (see http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1228657190/0#0), I suspect the main radiator is lots of small pipes in parallel, so just running a small flow through has no chance of clearing any of these that are blocked, 'cos it'll just flow through the others that aren't.

I removed a radiator which had suffered from the oil cooler letting go and left it overnight with Fernox central heating household stuff in it and that did a good job, just keep it away from the grass ::)

Something like this I assume Pete?
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/51463/Plumbing/Central-Heating-Treatment/Fernox-Heavy-Duty-Central-Heating-Cleaner-500ml#

or would it be better putting this in to the coolant system and driving the car around for a bit?

Presumably not a clever idea to use the Fernox in the system, just with the rad removed and then flushed thoroughly..
