Auto box problem
« on: 23 December 2008, 18:10:44 »

While driving around town, ie stop/start, the auto goes from 1st up the gears no problem but if I have to then slow down again say when in 2nd I can hear/feel a mild 'thud' from the box as I decelerate, does not sound good. Changed ATF & filters at 134k (now152k) checked level at 148k. Works very well except for this. Advise please.

The thudding noise could be symptomatic of thrust washer failure. Do a search on "dreaded thrust washer". Mine had similar noises/feel always at the same point on a familiar journey. My gearbox had done about 130k miles.

If it has developed some miles after your last gearbox oil change, if you drop the sumps off the pieces of the broken plastic thrust washer will be in the sump.

Thanks for the replies, as a P.S. it only seems to happen when the engine is hot ie 96 degrees/as the the first fan cuts in.
Could it be the make of ATF which is less effective when hot ?
