Need to get to the bottom of my heater problems
« on: 01 January 2009, 10:37:03 »

Ok so I have posted before about not having any heat from my heaters.

Car gets up to working temperature fine so assume its not the thermostat. Yesterday I removed what I think is the vac pipe from hbv and I think the air got slightly warmer but nothing like I would expect with the climate on high.

Is it worth replacing the HBV while I have got the engine apart? How much for a new HBV?

If you are going to replace HBV buy a genuine VX one as the pattern ones tend to leak from new.VX price is about £30=00 ish as changed mine mid last year.
If you are getting no heat have you checked that both the heater matrix pipes through bulk head on drivers side are getting hot..if not both then worth flushing /back flushing heater matrix first as the valve will only work the heating if the matrix has hot water flowing through it.

35 for hbv from vx.iirc
Never had a problem with heating system, but from what i gather, if the matrix is getting heat with both bulk head pipes getting hot, as said, but your not getting heat out of the vents then that only leaves vac pipe problem,as the vents are vac operated,  assuming the fan is working of course?

Thoroughly check the vac system, esp. the 2 vac pipes that enter the bulk head, next to the 2 heater matrix pipes, and elbow is secure on top of the hbv.

If, your heater matrix pipes to bulk head are not both hot to the touch, then that would suggest a blocked matrix, in which case flush back and forth.

Dont know enough about the hbv to fault it for sure but they leak so often i would consider changeing it if you remotely suspect it for vac issue as well.

Hth, but i would wait for more experienced suggestions as well.

Both pipes going in to bulkhead seem to be hot.

I removed one of the vac pipes at the bulkhead yesterday and like I said the air inside the car seemed a little warmer but nothing like it should be. Is this right? Should the air get warmer if I remove a vac pipe?

I can't use the car at the minute because I can't get it demisted enough to drive it safely. >:(

Dont know mate.
Press and hold auto and off together for 10 seconds or so. You should hear the vents reset.
On mine the ignition has to be on II, on but engine off for it to work. Not sure on yours. But listen to the motors, im thinking if the reset works then you have vacume pressure to the vents at least?? And also one more thing to eliminate. Sorry cant help more... Others will be along no doubt.

both pipes should be piping hot barely touchable , you get a better judgement by checking the pipes on the inside of the bulk head , they are just above the pedals slightly to the left both are aluminum

Both pipes hot. Can only touch them for a second! :-?

For the price of the HBV from VX I think I am going to change it anyway whilst I have the plenum etc off the engine. I hope this will help to sort it out. ::)

if both pipes are hot mate it aint the hbv!! heater bypass valve, you dont have a situation were the heat is by passing the matrix if the pipes are hot ::).. air distrubution box is the likly fault :y

Is your temp gauge dropping when you are driving along but then goes back up when sat in traffic? If so it could be you termostat stuck in the open position. Here is the how to to replace the stat.

HTH.

As you have tried everything else this could be the only thing left to do.
I had the same problem checked everything and it was all ok so the only thing that was left to do was the stat. Once I had done this I have heat into the car now and lovely and warm.
