Shell bearings for V6
« on: 11 December 2008, 11:56:29 »

I have question - who make shell bearings for v6 engines and where they can be bought, except opel/vauxhall dealership?
what is your experience or what have you heard?

Cant think of an occasion wher I have seen them needing replacement.

If it was me, I would be sourcing via a local factor

I can't remember anyone having rebuilt the bottom end of a V6 in the 2 years I've been hanging around here, so perhaps that's your answer. Your Englishn is certainly fine. :y EDIT: unlike mine ;)

There are a number of manufacturers of bearings. A few that come to mind are Federal Mogul, Glyco, etc.. Not sure who made the OEM bearings for this engine but I'm sure there will be a few companies who make them as pattern parts.

My advice is to speak to a local motor factor or engine workshop and see what they can get hold of.

1) why I am looking for them - my engine is going to be soon disassembled into pieces. local engine workshop people advised to replace piston rings and bearing shells also.
2) when I asked local dealership about prices:
- main bearings where around 200UKP
- bearings for each cylinder (forgot the term) cost around 45UKP PER PIECE!

aftermarket (yet unknown) offers main bearings for about 22UKP and bearings for all cylinders - also for 22UKP.

when I tried to find something from Glyco, Federal etc - no luck yet.

so. for now I have two choices (well, actually 3 - leave old ones :D)
buy original (dont have so much money for them) or take those cheap ones... but since they are SO cheap - it makes me nervous ;)

that's why I asked if anyone specifically knows manufacturer or seller.

I would try to find out the manufacturer of the aftermarket parts you're being offered. There aren't that many manufacturers of parts like this anyway.

They are expensive from the main dealer because they are supplied in relatively small volumes, I'd say, so look at the dealer prices as being inflated rather than the aftermarket ones being cheap.  However, 22 UKP for a complete set of bearings or 22 UKP for a complete set of piston rings sounds extremely cheap to me.

Labour is a significant cost in rebuilding an engine so it doesn't make sense to use poor parts, butn those dealer prices are too high.

those cheap bearings (main bearings and bearings for cylinders) - are ~45UKP (22 for main, and 22 for cylinder bearings (rod bearings - if my english roxx :D

work will be mainly done by myself. except of course specific things, like polishing head and block planes etc.

Ahh, OK. You mean the main bearings, which support the crankshaft in the block, and the "big end" bearings that connect the connecting rod to the crankshaft.

So, 45 UKP for the complete set of bearings. That doesn't sound dangerously cheap any more to me. Last time I rebuilt and engine (5 or so years ago) I spent about the same amount on the bearings, although it was a 4 cylinder, so not as many of them.
