brakes clonk
« on: 12 January 2009, 09:51:49 »

Hi folks thanks for taking the time to read this.... I've just bought my first omega and it's great, except for a brake clonk on breaking... IT's a 2.5 td cdx 1998..... I think it's coming from the rear but cant be sure. brakes work fine as does the abs, but unles you break very gently then thay clonk. also i believe there's a very slight delay between braking and the clonk.... thanks

Just going to jump in with a wild suggestion here as there are many possible causes! Check all the suspension bushes, front and rear, as that is a likely culprit! Does it pull to the side under braking?

TBH I'm thinking it could be front end noise, and wishbones are fubar

Could be sticky brake caliper - check pistons free on rears and slides/pistons free on fronts.

Probably rear subframe bushes then... You need to lack it up and try wobbling the wheel... Whilst there you can do as above and check the brakes! Also get a lever bar or large screwdriver in to check the bush.  :y :y :y

think about the rear brake pads cheap replacements dont fit properly and can cause clunk  change out for either vauxhall or good make ie mintex also fit a new pad fitting kit as this can cause the same prop hope this helps

Probably worth servicing the rear brakes per the guide in the maintenance section.  This will involve a clean up of the handbrake mechanism and the pads and give you the chance to have a good look at what's going on.

My 2p is a sticking handbrake cable can cause a clonk...

Mine has done exactly the same fo last 40K. The springy thing that locates the pads is missing on one side.

why would the handbrake clonk using the foot brake? just wondered what you were thinking

maybe the pads are clonking so might want fitting kit and or pads changing for vx ones or good quality as somebody said above

in my case the handbrake was binding (as the cable was worn where it enters its sheath).  After releasing the handbrake (so I thought) it made a clonk when applying the footbrake.

Probably not this, but still worth a look at what's going on around there - may be obvious.  I have also had 2 sets of rear pads fall apart (different cars) I suspect due to age and this can cause all sorts of noises, squeaks etc.
