Help - what size LPG injectors?
« on: 29 January 2009, 13:19:31 »

I need to decide on what size to drill the LPG injectors at the rail outlets for my fully sequential kit on a 2.6 auto Omega. Received wisdom so far is to start at 2.3mm based on 1bar gas pressure. Any knowledge out there? :-?

Not sure on a 2.6 but I believe we all went to 3mm with a pressure of about 1.25 bar on the 3.0/3.2

What kit are you using?

It will depend slightly on the exact kit but I reckon you'll need at least 2.5mm based on my experience with the Valtek rail injectors. 2.5 certainly won't end up being too big at any rate.

Yep, my 3.2's running 3mm and 1.25 BAR at idle (which actually drops to not far off 1 bar at full chat).

IIRC, the 2.6 uses the same petrol injectors as the 3.2. By that token, the petrol injector durations and hence the input to the LPG ECU will be shorter duration anyway, so in theory the 3mm nozzles will be right for that too.

But 2.5 is a good starting point, I'd say.

If the duration will be shorter then probably be better at 2.5mm... Mine is right on the limits of injector size at idle as the auto calibration sometimes needs a couple of goes!

I've got some spare nozzles somewhere and am tempted to try smaller ones with a higher pressure to see if it cures the pressure drop at full throttle. :-? :-? :-/ :-/

Thanks for the replies so far. The system I am going to be using is from Motogas with Autogaz ECU and Valtek rails.

Sounds like the same system we use... Good kit and proven to work on the Omega :y :y

May I ask where you sourced it as we can get a bit of a deal on this stuff! PM is fine if you'd prefer

Yes I am using the red 3 ohm injectors.

All other tips will be welcome, especially on unravelling the wiring and using the set-up software

Yep, same kit as ours. There are some photos of my install here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1216678718

I belive the auto-calibration is prone to insisting the nozzles are too large when in fact they are fine. It only measures at idle, for a start, and the more important factor is whether they deliver enough fuel at wide open throttle.

My gut feeling is the pressure drop is purely the demand for vapour from the engine against what the vapouriser can supply. Opening up some of the restrictions in the liquid pipe and the various adaptors that connect it might be worth a try.

Smaller nozzles would just mean you have to open them for longer to get the same gas flow so you're back where you started. In fact, mine occasionally throws a "injectors fully open" error even with 3mm nozzles. Raising the pressure will increase flow, but I'm not sure what the pro's and con's of this are.

James' first conversion actually had the yellow 1 ohm Valteks and they worked fine. More noisy than the 3 ohm ones but in theory they should open and close faster.

Will,

I'll post the link to my conversion later as it's a bit awkward to do when browsing on a mobile ::) ::)

Update your profile with your location and there may even be someone nearby with a converted mig you can have a look at to get some ideas of locating items! You'll get fantastic tech support from this forum and it'll be saving you money in no time at all.

Mine has now paid for itself and is saving me money! :y :y ;) ;)

Hey! Mine too, thinking about it. It's a nice feeling now petrol prices are edging up again. :y

I agree Kevin, definitely a nice feeling as petrol is on the up now. I reckon it was paid for about a month ago but only started celebrating this week ::) ::) :y :y

Thanks for the pictures and advice. Combined with my son's recent experience of installing lpg on his m30 beemer, I reckon there is a good chance of success. Will
