2.5TD pressure unit at front of air inlet manifold
« on: 31 January 2009, 08:09:59 »

Hi there everyone

On the 2.5TD there is what appears to be a pressure sender unit at the front right of the air inlet manifold. Can anyone tell me what this does?

The reason I am asking is that a small amount of oil is dripping from the cutout at the bottom of the unit onto the alternator. I have had to rig up a small gutter to divert it away from this area but this can't be right.
What would the symtoms of it being faulty be? How could I best test it?I have had issues with revs dropping away too much while changing gear (1-2) making this a lumpy procedure. Then again the engine seems to speed up a bit while changing through the higher gears, though this is an occassional occurance. Would this unit, if it is faulty, be a reason why?

Thanks

All pipes are connected and sound. The oil is coming out of the cutout at the bottom of the round part before the pipe connection.

This is common on all 2.5TD's that I've seen.

Likely to be a build-up of oil residue in the induction system forward of the turbo. Remove the 'turbo diesel' housing and clean out all the oil from here and the EGR valve - I do mine at each oil-change.

Check also:
Air filter condition
All induction hoses for security/splits
Turbo spindle bearings
Engine oil level and condition. Mine gets an oil/filter-change every 2500 miles - ignore Vx's recommended 10,000 mile service interval!
Use Vx 10/40 semi synthetic - it's competitively priced too.

Forgot to mention - the oil may be coming from the vent hole.
Seems to point to the internal seal(s) failed within the EGR valve itself.
Try a good clean-out etc; (as per my previous post), first.
See where you go from there.

Both my '94 Elite 2.5td and my current '00 2.5td CD have the same. Just a slight weep that builds up on the hose above the alternator. A little annoying, but not a major issue.

:) Thanks for all your advice. Mine gets an oil and filter change every 3k. My brother in law buy a 50 gallon drum of fully synthetic so I get the oil for about £18..Bloody marvelous!
I will take the bits apart to clean them as you suggest. Do I need to get any gaskets for the reassembly? I'll get back to you to let you know the results. Could be a week or two as I will struggle to find the time at the mo.
Thanks once again. This is a fantastic well of info for the non-mechanics among us. :y

Wouldn't bother with fully synth oil in it, the particulates destroy the oil long before the oil breaks down.

I'd shove the cheaper semi in.....
