They were saying of the radio today that there's a shortage of glass to make bottles out of. Prolly because people won't drink water out of pipes any more. Nor will they drink beer out of a cask :(

Actually, what happened to the glass Corona bottles that used to have a 10p deposit on them? Used to be able to spot one a mile off when I was a lad. Nice little supplement to my pocket money. Now we just chuck them away - well, re-cycle them, but what use is that when all the green glass is mixed up with the clear, etc?  >:(

It's down to the amount of uses that glass can be used for these days. In days gone by, we had to pay for 'cullett' aka broken glass to be taken away to landfill. These days we get paid for it as a commodity. 30% of new glass for windows is now recycled as it melts at a lower temperature than sand and thus saves energy in the glass making process.

It can, and is, be used as an aggregate in road building and is used in a material called glassphalt.  :o

It is also used as a ballast for filtration systems as well as numerous other uses. No wonder, therefore, that there is a shortage for making bottles.
