Rumbling noise from front offside wheel.
« on: 25 February 2009, 15:44:23 »

I have had a rumbling noise from the front offside for some time now. My first thought was wheel bearing but it passed its MOT recently and I even pointed the noise out to the tester (a good friend of mine) and he says the bearing is fine.

I replaced the steering idler as it needed doing and am now stumped. I am thinking that it may be the tyres as I put 2 part worns on last year and the noise started some time after that (not sure how long) but there is still plenty of tread left on them.

Any ideas?

I'd double check the bearing yourself...

As said, check bearing again.

Also try swapping the tyres around and see if the noise moves with it.

I had a new Vx wheel bearing fitted a year or 2 back and only after a couple of thousand K's it started rumbling, now there was no movement in the bearing at all, but as it was a Vx part it was exchanged and the cost of the refit was paid by them!!! so sometimes they do rumble, most prob the tyre tho as suggested!

Move the tyres around first to eliminate this.
If the rumble persists, remove pads, and listen/feel the offending hub. Spin it and see if there's any roughness or excessive play.
