Couple of quick checks you can do to "prove" its the thermostat and not the matrix ....

Start Engine from cold.
Switch CC off completly.
Leave to idle and pop the bonnet
Lightly hold the top hose of the rad as the engine warms.

1. If the temperature slowly but steadily increases, the thermostat is stuck open. With the heater OFF the temp "should" eventually rise to 95 and the main fans kick in.

2. If the temperature stays cold and then suddenly gets a surge of heat, the thermostat is working properly. With the heater OFF the temp "should" eventually rise to 95 and the main fans kick in.

Once the system is at the top end of the temperature, switch the heater to "ON/AUTO" with a high temperature selected. The air should run pretty hot within about a minute, if it does not then the matrix may be blocked.
