Give your breather hoses a clean out and the throttle body as well, replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been done yet as they may be the cause of the strong petrol smell. Once this has been done give it a blast down the motorway or dual carriage way before returning to the mot testing station.

What engine?

A good service normaly sorts most things out.....classic things being blocked breathers, air leaks, oil in plug wells, knackered plugs, blocked air fliters etc
