automatic problem

hi, my 30l auto drives fine and smothly for a couple of miles then cuts out with automatic fault on the display.  any ideas ???

Well the first question is has it had an ATF change, if so how many miles has the box done?

When you say it "cuts out" do you mean it loses drive all together? Does it still work manually in any of the other gears e.g. 1,2 or3?

Do the lights on the gearchange lever all work correctly or do you sometimes get them all lighting up?

I mean the engine cuts out and auto fault comes up on the display. up until then all is well, no noise no judder and smooth changes. i'm thinking overheating but have not much idea.
