Stalling issue 2.0.16v estate 1998

Just bought old omega estate, love the car great drive, very surprised as just wanted runabout really and happened upon it. now i have it i would like a new one! (if only) wife passed test and i am relgated to the "second " car... :'(

anyway, the car starts from cold great, idles fine and the choke kicks in along with the fan. then once motion applied, on release of pedal it stalls. once warm and into a run it is fine. but if i go to the petrol station and fill up it stalls at the junction prior to pulling away. if i rev it it seems to aleviate it (dont like to do this though) get a smell of oily things.. hmmm....
anyway..googled the fault and was steered at the idle control valve and went along to the shop today and armed meself with new oil, filter, carb cleaner and engine flush.................then i read on your site its the crank sensor ahhhhhhhhhh!
so have i wasted me cash?
help and any advice please..want to tackle it this weekend if poss..

I suspect your camcover seal may have gone too (oily smell) - have a look in your plug wells and see if they are full of oil.

have you checked the engine breather pipes ; i had same probs when i had my car 1st :y

No mate not yet. Read the thread and link above and it refers to the thin breather pipe getting carbonated. will sort it this weekend. im glad it all seems so easy to sort with a bit of care and attention.
if all fails will lokk at crank sensor possibility.
thanks for that though, it seems to reinforce the pipe being the culprit.

talking of blocked breather pipes, i think i can claim the world record on blockages........had an old porsche 924 years ago and found a pipe with 8 INCHES of carbon in it!! sold it pretty quick too..

Not just the pipe mate. The main culprit is the metal nozzle that the thin pipe pushes on to.

thanks for that, did a quick test on the small pipe this morning in my lunch break and ,,,yip...no suction, think ive found at least one of the faults anyhow. take your advice and will take whole thing apart and clean thoroughly.

also due to stalling got some ems light flashes so decided to do a p clip test i got

ten flashes then 1 then ten then ten then back to start again.

what is this?

am i seeing 11 and 20 or 10 1 and 10 and 10?

also tried my elm327 and wont read the car!  using scantool think i need some better software...anyone got vauxcheck?

started it today..........
blimey what an effort to get the small pipe valve off!
anyway did it ...eventually and also did the idle valve and throttle body. putting back together was very hard to get the air valve lined up and banjo in order etc.. ended up trying car and have a water leak!! bo**o**s!
Had a close look and washer next to throttle body leaking on top, loads of small bubbles coming out.
since im a newby, is there a knack to this, have tightended and retightened 5 times and still leaking. is it feasablt to use ptfe tape as its just water connection? or is it a case of lining uo properly?
help! getting a new windscreen on monday but cant drive it to work like it is (getting done there)
anyway,\ on the good side idling issue now gone!! hooray!

What sort of connection is it? Like a banjo with copper washers?

yes its a banjo but the washers are like a soft silver alloy type.

done it, the washer was crushed badly due to my not being careful tightening up again. mangaed to crush washer back into some sort of shape and used ptfe tape around adges tightened it all up (properly) and all is well!
noticed last owner has knackered a screw thread on the throttle body attatchment to the idling control valve. have used temporary screw but suspect i will need to re tap this hole to get proper tightness.
anyway its`all doen now, will have to leave oil change and cam cover check till next week. went for a short run and not perfect but well on its way. think ive bought one thats hardly been serviced so most of stuff will need slow replacement.

many thanks for the advice offered, i could not have done it otherwise - will follow it better next time though!  8-)

You can use either new, original ally ones or anything thats normally used on a Banjo joint (copper - i.e. sump plug washers - or I used Dowty seals just because i had some kicking about).
