Steering rack leak stopper fluid
« on: 22 March 2009, 15:10:13 »

Hi all, my wife has been told her power steering rack has started to leak, not bad at present.
Whilst lookng around I found on fleabay a fluid made by Lucas that says it stops steering rack leaks, anybody got any experience of these fluids and whether they work or not?
At present I am on the 'if sounds too good to be true - it is' side of the fence

I assume this isn't an Omega?

I imagine such fluid will be designed to swell the rubber seals, which would make me wonder what long term effects it would have on the other seals and hoses in the system. It would probably only provide a temporary cure and might risk other problems. Then again, a rack change could well be costly depending on the car concerned so it might be worth a try. :-/

Depends what car it is... Some are very easy to change, in which case I wouldn't bother with stopper fluid, some aren't! ::) ::) ::)

Thanks for your replies, sorry I did not clarify the car in question is a 96 Nissan Primera, it's off topic re Omega's so maybe should have posted in general chat.
Just wondred if others had heard of / used such a product.

Kevin

As Kevin rightly states, these fluids swell seals...
Also available for gearboxes...

I used it on a Senator autobox 5 years ago, never had a problem after that...
You could use this fluid and see how it works, if not just replace rack...
Really depends how bad the leak is, and how it affects your steering...
