Whining Diff ?
« on: 31 March 2009, 19:14:03 »

I have a noise best described as 'whining' which seems to be prevalent between circa. 50-70mph - trying to figure out possible causes ?

First thoughts were wheel bearing, diff, tyres, exhaust resonance....but changed the tyres, sound not consistent with exhaust - put in neutral at these speeds, and sound still there.

So, narrowed down to wheel bearing or diff ? Or something else ?
Only other point of note is that when cornering reasonably swiftly - say a fast roundabout  :D - I can here a slight 'pulsing whine'...is this likely the same thing ? Or....

Any words of wisdom, peeps  :)

whineing would normally be the diff or wheel bearing, jack the rear of the car up and run the engine, stand behind the car (would never recomend going under a car turning its wheel while on jacks) and listen if the noice comes from one side or the middle of the car (where the diff is)

a naff wheel bearing will sound different depending on which way you turn, where as a naff diff bearing will not.
