Rear wheel bearing
« on: 09 August 2007, 11:05:27 »

I'm about to change the right hand rear wheel bearing tonight, juddering sound which disappears in turns to right. No free play, but the sound reveals its the bearing. Looking in TIS it requires hellofalot special tools, is this correct? I assume its only the flange off, locking ring out and off we go with the hub... Then the inner ring out with a common puller if its tight, how about the outer ring from the case? Can it be hammered out? I don't have a worksho press, and I'm not planning to take the whole suspension apart from the car... Someone has changed the bearing, please tell me the key points and issues :)

Am I the only one who's ever changed this bearing?

They are a PITA to change yourself......Vaux uses special tools to do it. Its possible to do it yourself, but you need to remove the rear wishbone completely. Then you need to press the spindle off, then use a shop press to get the bearing out. Press in the new bearing and press in the spindle.....

Here are some pics showing the process:

Thanks Tom, it seems that I'll be concentrating to the beers I had reserved for the job... Sadly have to go to the local Opel-shop and they'll be charging me hundreds of euros... Well, at least got the wishbones done this week!

the problem will be getting new bearings out/in as they are pressed in, ive done these on my old monza, royale etc & i was lucky enough not need any specal tool for disasembly, but to get the new bearing in i got the help of a friend who worked at the bus garage where they had a suitable press, might be worth scouting around to see if there is an engineering company near you thatll do it for a drink,,,good luck :y

Despite my previous comments I did that job. Not that bad. The problem was how to pull the outer ring of old bearing out, I solved it by having a suitable pipe turned to relevant diameter. The new bearing can be used as a reference, it has to go in the pipe easily, outside diameter has to fit on the lug of the hub. Then you need a threaded bar/long bolt with a flange that fits in the hub and one for the other end. Then just screw it out.

Fitting the new one: put the new bearing to freezer, when cold it slides in the hub ok. Then let it warm and put the shaft/wheel end of the hub (which is now separated from the car) to freezer. You can push it in and do the rest with the nut inside.

Really, I'm not an expert but it was not that bad job. Sadly I did not take any photos...

Mark DTM (and I) did this job on mine a few weeks ago....

1 piece of advice...

Go to a garage and pay em to do it, was a bastard of a job for us!

I wonder your comment Jimbob, it could not feel that bad?

I spent some time wondering how to dismantle it but managed to get it apart with this "special tool" I made, got advice from a Finnish Opel-forum (no pics and Finnish language is not helping you) and putting back together was easy enough with the help of freezer. But, as said, with normal workshop tools, it's a PITA

Mine was totally seized in, no puller was ever going to shift it - Bent the puller!

Ended up removing the rear trailing arm, using excessive heat and a bloody great sledgehammer!

A long, hard job!
