lpg fuel line routing
« on: 27 April 2009, 08:33:29 »

tank is a donut in spare wheel well so its the wrong/opposite side of the car to the vapourisor which is on the drivers wheel arch in the engine bay. I currently have the fuel line routed directly out of the rear wing behind the side section of the bumper. Then behind wheel arch liner then follows self level air line under the dif plate to fuel filter area, then under trailing arm with all the other fuel lines.(this is a bit tight for my likeing) then follows the rest of fuel lines down drivers side and through the square ish hole in the wheel arch to engine bay.

1) anyone see any problems with the routing, before i drill and screw the clips and make it permanent, esp in the dif and trailing arm areas. I am a bit concerned how tight it is behind trailing arm, also aware i "may" need to move the arm to deal with my rear donut bush problem and will need to take care not to pinch it.

2)presume behind the dif plate is ok?

3) the fuel line crosses above the exhaust by and above the rear axel area, there is no heat shield there to protect the chasis so presume heat will not effect the fuel line. Dont know where else to route it if not there, its the furthest point away from heat of the exhaust. There is not enough pipe  to run round boot then exit on the drivers side, and dont want that anyway.

4) is the floor double skinned? If i drill and self tap the clips next to the fuel line will i get a line of screws sticking up through the carpets? There are vertical faces i could use but these seem too close to jacking points to me.

Cheers

Chris :-)

IIRC, the LPGA requirement is that fuel lines are routed at least 250mm away from exhausts unless "adequately protected" so you will need some sort of heat shield where it is close to the exhaust.

One option I considered when thinking about doughnut tanks was routing round the rear of the car under the bumper and up the driver's side, meaning it doesn't have to cross the exhaust.

I did shield the pipe with a bit of slide-on insulating sleeve in one area where i couldn't achieve 250mm.

As to proximity to trailing arms, etc, as long as It's secured so there's no possibility of the pipe chafing on moving parts I'd say it is acceptable, if not ideal. I know mine is routed quite close to the rear bush to keep it away from the exhaust!

Thanks Kevin. Ill need some insulation then as the fuel line isnt long enough to route round the bumper, it was one of the first things i looked at when measuring up. Any pointers?

Did you screw the clips verticaly into the floor next to existing fuel lines?

Also while i think of it, the space in middle of the tank is rather limited and bending the pipe to exit at a right angle, the pipe has a tendency to kink. I realise you probably didnt have this issue with your cylinder but are you aware of a 90degree fitting to over come this? I should ring Tailo re this thinking about it as i also have an issue with the fitting on the vapourisor being too small for the pipe fittings too it. :-(

Ps if i have to take that bumper of again.... What a pain with reversing sensors.

The insulation I used was something like the following:

http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p6809/SILVER-FIRE-SLEEVE-10mm-I.D-PER-METRE/product_info.html

Not cheap though. :o

I did screw the clips iinto the floor. I tried to keep the pipe mountings on the elevated box sections in the floor to minimise the possibility of breaking through into something sensitive.

James had a similar issue with a doughnut tank and overcame it IIRC. A 90 degree elbow would do the job, as you say. You migh also try cutting down the nose on the compression-to-polyflex adaptor a little to reduce its' length. IIRC they can be shortened a little and still fit fully home into the compression fitting.

No reversing sensor issues on my poverty-spec MV6. ;)

He really is keen on the customer service! He can be challenging to get hold of sometimes but can't help enough when you get him :y :y :y

Oh... And his 2 year warranty is proven to be honoured and well worth having, which makes a refreshing change :y :y :y

The kit he supplies is one he has put together from many suppliers and is entirely his own combination. He has just (in the last 4 months or so) released it over Europe and is getting it LPGA Type Approved in the UK.

He's a very busy man at the moment!
