Before I forked anymore dosh I thought i'd do a crafty one and get the mrs to call the rac to have a look a look. The only problem was that I was at work when they came so didn't get to grill the fella!  Anyway the report he left said the engine was misfiring and only running on 5 cylinders with a blow from the exhaust. He suggested getting the car serviced.

Yes, that sounds about right. did you check the spark plugs/ ignition leads?
Also a compression test while doing the spark plugs would uncover or rule out any major mechanical faults with the engine.

oh no now you're worrying me....   the garage that told me it was a faulty exhaust valve never came back to me when I enquired as to whether they did a pressure test. I was really hoping that a rocker cover gasket, plugs and leads change would mean problem solved. I got the impression that if this didn't fix it then the likelyhood is that its the dispak that's the problem.

you must have a compression test carried out to identify the problem , your just going round and round in circles untill you know whats the problem you cant come to a cure

Ive spoken to the guy who's doing the work and asked him to do a pressure test aswell.  Presumably it would make more sense to do that before carrying the other work?? Ive read on here about percentages when doing the pressure tests, can someone explain what that means?

a compression test is a pressure test , the readings should all be within 10% of each other
