Yet another Coolant leak
« on: 14 June 2009, 22:28:38 »

I have had a coolant leak for the past month or so - wasn't bad at first but last couple of days it's really p!""£$g it out.

Anyway to cut a long story short I stripped the inlet manifolds off and there is definitely coolant in the V - on the o/s along the oil cooler plate.

There are also crystalline deposits all along that side as well as round the thermostat housing.

Problem is what is leaking thermostat housing or oil cooler plate?????

Should I do both?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received :y

Can you do a pressure test of system? It would show up the leak while you have the intake off. That said, the crystals only show where the site of the leak is. to do with the pressure change as the water leaks, although they normally only show on a slow leak.

if you can pressureise the system that will help show the leak. Some imagination may be needed to rig something up. Seal a tube to the filler on the water bottle and blow? Rig a footpump or air line up. Something like that. But you could also argue its worth doing both while your there? If you have the tools and patients.

Well  managed to pressurise the coolant system with my gunsons eezy-bleed and a spare cap and guess what........................ it was the HBV all along - drat, double drat and triple drat. :'(

Shouldn't be too difficult to put a new one on seeing as the engine is half stripped anyway.

But that still leaves me with the problem of why there was crystalline deposits and coolant in the V - I suspect the oil cooler plate is weeping( :'() a bit - I'm gonna leave it anyway as I can't be bothered but will do it at next oil change.
Thanks for all help :y

if there are crystalline deposits there must be coolant leak..so imho dont wait for next repair session..and good idea to check oil cooler if you didnt before.. as its failure causes real mess :y
