Filling the autobox
« on: 15 June 2009, 09:21:32 »

I'm about to change the auto box oil. I'm prepared with new genuine gaskets, new filter (non-genuine) and 8-10 litres of Mobil ATF320 (dex III spec). The pain will be to have the car high enough and level. I assume I can manage to drain it/remove the sumps (doesn't need to be level at that stage) but filling is somewhat frightening. It's messy with some 500cc syringe thingy, no room to pour in from a canister. How have you managed that? And, when draining, I assume to get some 5 litres out from the sump/box itself, how to get out the rest? When filliing: can I just replace the quantity I have managed to get out (+ some 10% or so...), but a bowl under the car, start it and lower it, go through gears, turn it off and jack up the right side and put the plug in? I dont have ramps and only have two stands. Yes, I can get the car up, one end on stands and other end on jack but I read somewhere that Omega should not be run on gear with both rear wheels up to avoid damage to drive shafts, is this correct?

To empty remove both sumps, take out filter, clean or replace, check magnet for 'big bits' and clean, then replace everything. The autobox holds 8.4 litres of Dexron 3 from dry, the sumps hold approx 4 litres, to replace more than 4 litres fill up once, start engine move autoshift, stop, then remove and empty both sumps again, refit and refill, you now have 75% new fluid and have used 8 litres, if you do it again you will have 87% new fluid and used 12 litres, up to you.

I used a length of hose that just fitted into the side of the fill/level hole, and a funnel from the engine bay. All was going to plan, not a drop was spilt ..... untill my hose came out of the g/box.  :'( It's amazing how far a little ATF can spread over you drive.   ;)  ;)  ;)  :y

And remember that the final level check is with the gearbox warm and the engine running.
Mark suggested jacking up one side, fill with engine running (it will now be overfull because of the slope), lower jack and some fluid will run out, raise jack again and put in the level plug....engine running throughout.

Does it really hold 4.something litres even after you've drained the sumps?  :o
