Gearbox ECU gone
« on: 11 July 2009, 11:25:37 »

Hi,
My Omega is stuck in 4th gear and the Vauxhall garage say that the ECU has gone and quoted me £998 to fix it.  It is a 'S' reg but I dont have that amount of money to fix it so I am wondering about finding a second hand ECU.  Does anyone know where I could get one and also I've heard that it has to be decoded.  Is it going to be worth fixing or do I scrap it?
Thanks

Is your S - sports light on permanantly? You really need codes read to determine why your car is upset. There are loads of reasons why your car's gearbox is stuck in 3rd gear (4th is an electrically engaged gear so your will be stuck in 3rd not 4th)
I very much doubt that the gearbox ECU is dead!  :y

Sport light isn't on.  The car has been playing up for ages when driving along you could hear it going thru the gears but sometimes when it tried to go to 3rd the revs would increase then the automatic gearbox alert would come up on the dash, this could happen several times in a journey or not at all.  It would then be stuck in 3rd and the car would have to be switched off and then restarted for the gearbox to right itself.  Vauxhall have diagnosed it and say that the ECU has gone into default mode hence the reason for a new ECU.

So, what fault codes did it throw up?
A new ECU is usually Vauxhall's way of saying that they're not too sure!  ;D ;D ;D

Guessing codes are 8-Incorrect gear ratio

I'm sure unlucky alf will comment soon (:P) but its unlikely the ecu has failed

Where are you? If you're near me, might be worth me having a looksie over it

Sounds like you have a typical fault there. ::)

Change the fluid and filters, adjust the brake band and fit a new thrust washer. Brings them up like new  :y :y

it would be rude of me not to make a comment ;D, when my ecu failed [yes it really did TB ;)] the warning was showing before the engine was even started, i would agree its more of a g/box problem so you can either do what Tonkapaj suggests or get a known good s/hand box, but either way the box has got to come out, unless you can borrow an ecu just to eliminate it first,,,good luck mate cos ive been there :y

as said, stock vx answer, which means havent a clue so lets get loads of cash out of him before we decide it must be a box issue, which they know they wont get involved with, as they treat them as sealed units and will only fit a new one which is more that the car is worth.

Where are you? Far better to get one of the tech2 owninging members on here to run a diagnostic and see what the fuss is about.
