steering wheel wobble under light braking
« on: 26 July 2009, 22:26:12 »

vibration coming through steering wheen when lightly braking from 50-60mph

tyres are in good condition apart from wearing on inner edge(will arrange to have set up properly)

discs and pads look fine although i assume its difficult to check for warped discs?

any help appriciated - MOT is due and i assume this will be picked up and failed because of it?

The MOT brake test is at a lot lower speed than 50mph, so may not be noticed.  Never the less it should be fixed, probably warped disc(s).  Take off wheel, place pencil on axle stand or similar, hold close to disc, spin disc and observe gap twixt pencil and disc.  Look in manual to see what spec limit is.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Alan..thats an interesting way of testing. :-? Never heard of that one before though I'm sure it works. :y Although if you can feel the vibration in the car its pretty certain they need replacing. Its not good to run them like that and would probably fail the MOT.

I'd use a DTI!   ;) Also, you need to bolt the disc on with 3/all your wheel bolts, theM6 bolt is only intended to hold the disc while you change a wheel.  :y

so the best bet is likely to be a warded disc then?

the wobble reduces the harder i press the pedal

If the disc is warped you would usually feel it through the brake pedal, When mine started doing that it was down to the wear in the wishbones..

Warped discs matt, defo mate, i have the same problem but not going to change them untill i need to change pads or it gets worse. Mot will not pick up this as they are not spinning the wheels fast enough. :y
