Cleaning headlamps - best options please?
« on: 17 August 2009, 15:05:01 »

The headlamp lenses on my Omega have become very dull and dirty over the years, is there a recommended way of restoring them to clarity again?

Thanks!

Andy

Some people have had success with TC and lots of polishing, fine wet,n,dry and then final polish with G8 compound.
I found that mine were so bad that the easiest option was to buy a new pair of lights as cheap as possible on fleabay and then change the lenses over as my original units are HID,s.
Result is great but there is a cost implication involved.I wish you the best of luck with them.

I used T-cut on my previous Omega headlights and it brought them up quite well. :y

Thanks! I appreciate all your replies.

I had tried using T Cut (by hand) but got a little worried that I might be doing more harm than good. It certainly did start to work on the film but the lens remained discoloured and dull. I hadn't thought of using Solvol Autosol though so will try on a small section first. Will find some of this plastic polish as well.

I'll let you know how I get on as it might help others as well.

Cheers!

Hello guys! You can use XERAPOL product wich is a polish for plastics and abrasive tape 2000. To see the results, see the clubopel.com link http://www.clubopel.com/viewtopic.php?t=29204&highlight=xerapol

It really depends on how badly they are gone. Probably in the UK, I'm sure you could restore them with a combintation of T-Cut or rubbing compund/polishing compound/ Brasso or plastic polish. In the Middle East they get really bad and even sanding them down may temporarily reveal a new facade it doesn't last vey long and quickly discolours again.

If you do rub them down, I'm not sure if you will retain the original clarity of the lens. I don't know if there is some kind of polycarbonate coating that you maybe removing?

I paid 125 quid for a pair of DEPO headlight units, and even if they last me a year I'll be happy.

Ive just done the job in prep for MOT in a couple of months. I bought a wee bottle of "Greygate Plastic Polish" as used by NATO on fighter plexiglass from Fleabay. An hours hard rubbing ( they cant touch you for it  ::)  ) and 100% better - ah look bulbs in there!

I had tried T Cut before with little result.
