why someone had smeared a tube anddrocker gaskets.
« on: 01 September 2009, 14:05:22 »

why oh why anyone should use a tube and a half of gasket silicon instead of replacing the rocker gaskets is anyones guess but the small leak managed to nearly fill all 6 plug recesses up in a short time. Thanks to GM for changing the design of the rocker covers os my expensive Vectra ones I already had didn't fit. Der. Oh well I should have the car back soon. I have had the front discs replaced with new pads, all the rollers and adjuster on the front end (due to a premature failure of the aux plastic wheel resulting in an interesting few minutes as I was driving through twisities at the time, bastid) a new water pump (just in case), new cam belt etc.

But why did GM change the design of the rocker tops on ehat is essentially the same engine as the Veccie? And why did my mechanic only notice after the shops had shut on Saturday on a Bank Holiday weekend :-)

You have to fit the vectra ones on the opposite heads to allow access to the oil filler but its still in a bad place, its because the vectra is front wheel drive and the engine is across rather than front to back. The Omega camcovers are better anyway, just keep the breathers clean ;)

I bloody hope they are cos it's a bit of a fit up to swap them  ;D

It was my naivety to assume they were the same. I've had 2 months to get the proper ones. The rest of the kit, idler and tensioner aside, is all precautonary and thankfully the labour rate is low for me. The parts are still nearly £500 though, but I idd ask him to change a lot.  :'(

Just under £600 FITTED. The labour rate is ridiculously low as it's a good mate doing the work. There is rather a lot of new stuff going on but should see another 100k without the need to worry too much.

On the upside, there will be a nice new set of Vectra rocker gaskets and seals up for grabs.

Vectra covers and seals do fit the Omega, I've done it! The oil filler becomes a little difficult to access but no probs using a funnel to fill. Covers are ally, look better and don't warp.

ah yes the covers AND seals do fit but the seals do not if you don't have the covers.

Sorry, took that to mean you had a set of Vectra covers.

Nah. I had a leaky rocker cover on the Veccie and bought the gaskets in anticipation of it being done. It never got too bad so it was never done. When I bought the Omega it had a weep which was noticed by 'my man' and he said it would need doing. Due to having the gaskets for the V6 we both assumed they would be the same. Wrong!!!

It's all done now waiting for me to pick her up.

Omega covers dont warp if fitted correctly (its another spanner monkey myth)......and the vectra ones causes issues with the plug leads fitting well on the Omega setup.....plus they blow the crank seals out if the breathers block up.

Remember that the V6 appeared a few years before the Vectra did (in the Omega and Cavalier/Calibra!)
