Vauxhall garages can't get my Omega de-imobilised
« on: 07 October 2009, 22:54:32 »

Hey all,

hope you can help me with this (all new to me). My 96 Omega 3.0 V6 won't start and will not communicate with my mechanics ECU device. He thinks it is the transponder in the key that has died. I was going to get it recovered to my local Vauxhall dealer (Chesham, Bucks), but they told me that there diagnostics equipment will not work with the '96 Omega because thecar is too old. They said they need a tech1 diagnostic and gave me a Vauxhall dealer (Hemel Hempstead) who would have one. I have phoned this dealer, who tell me that they do not have the correct equipment and don't know anyone that does. Are they all talking rubbish? My car was working faultlessly a week ago and now can't be used at all!! Please somebody help :'(

The gadget in the key is a passive chip that can't really die, I don't think.  They can come loose though, I'm sure I've read on here, so have a go at getting into the key's plastic housing and check that it's there and secure. (Little rectangular 'chunk' IIRC)

Could also be the bit around the ignition barrel that 'talks' to this chip.  If the key checks out OK, I'd be whipping the cowling off from around the steering column and having a gander at any wiring you can see near where the key goes in.

Open the key up CAREFULLY and ensure the transpnder chip a) is still present, b) has not moved !!  I had this on the old miggy and a drop of superglue sorted it !!

Apparently the juxtaposition of the transponder in the key and the reciever in the lock is critical, and if the transponder chip has moved the reader will not "see" it.

This may not be your problem .. but it might be worth a try ???

EDIT .. must type faster ... :(

1996 car, tech1. I don't think this age car had a transponder chip. My 1994 Omega didn't. It relied on me pointing the key at the sensor by the electric sunroof knob and pressing the button on the key everytime I needed to reset the immobiliser.

I assume you have tried new batteries in the key fob?

Hi
I guess you do not have a spare key you can try.  When you get this sorted it would be a good idea to get a spare key as it may overcome the inconvenience of having a non-starting car.
Try an auto-locksmith, hopefully he will come to you rather than you transporting the car to him, and he can probably provide a spare key at the same time as sorting your problem.  Yellow Pages or Google should find someone in your area.
A good main dealer would have advised going to an auto locksmith, trouble is there seem to be very few good main dealers!

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Do the paperclip test just to make sure you have no codes stored

Stop.....lets understand what type of immobiliser setup it is first!

Question (an importnat one): Do you have a small black plastic dome by the front interior light?

Hi
I'm guessing the OP does not have a plastic dome as his car is the same age and spec as mine which also has no dome, but hopefully he will come on and confirm or deny?

Lets not guess, 95/96 is right on the change over point.

If its the early version, its easy to work round, if its the later version, then tech2 can be used.
