Tyre size
« on: 14 October 2009, 11:11:03 »

I have 225/55 R16 tyres fitted by the previouse owner, to my 2.2 petrol 4 cly, rather than the specified 195 s. The wider tyres are normally fitted to the heavier engined cars, therefore should I run the front tyres at 25psi rather than the recommended 30psi as the front end is a lot lighter. I ask as at present the front wheels want to follow small contours in an uneven road surface, the tyres feel over inflated. Thanks

I`ve got 225/55 R16 all round and run them @ 32psi. Under-inflation will cause tramlining (as will certain tyres) amongst other things :y
25psi IMHO seems a tad too low :-?

You're not confusing the 'correct' size with what you've got in the boot are you? The spare is a 195 on a 15" rim in all Omegas no matter what size tyres are on the car.  :y :y

You have the correct size tyres.
Same ones are on mine 2.2 and they came as standard. You have tyre pressures in the manual, and inflate them accordingly

Thanks guy's, my problem then seems to be that although there is no play in the steering, I can feel every imperfection on the road surface through the steering wheel i.e the road wheels seem to want to follow any contours on the road surface. Sorry that's the best I can describe the problem Thanks

I used to have Pirelli P7s on mine and they follow every 'detail' on the road whatever pressure I ran them at. I have tried Falken FK452s - very good but need to be about 2 PSI over spec. or they are a bit squishy and when worn make a heck of a din, and I now run Nexen CP641s, and they aren't bothered by the road imperfections at all, and they seem fairly decent for grip and noise. I run the front at 31 and the back at 33 PSI and get very even wear.  I should mention that I have always got a load in the boot due to the LPG tank hence the extra 1 PSI in the rears to get the wear pattern right.

You could always get the camber and tracking checked (WIM the best) and check your wishbone bushes as well, as when they start to go soft they give a similar effect.

Hope that helps

Thanks all, I am getting the wheel alignment checked today, hopefully that will solve the problem, although it is interesting to here that others have had this problem with pirelli P7s.

Spare on mine (unused and original?) is a 205 on a 15" steel rim.
