bad starting sometimes
« on: 22 October 2009, 21:29:21 »

on occassions my tractor has starting probs. its as if the starter motor is sticking. but it has always started.  you can imagine my panic on Tuesday when i had to pick my 6yr old grand, daughter from school but went elsewhere first. i left it for two mins, tried turning it for 20mins eventually flattening the battery. the outcome was ok in the end a taxi driver got me there just on time & later on a neighbour jumped it off (first turn of the key) i will have to try & sort it tomorrow as iv,e just been informed that i,m picking her up tomorrow. fingers x

first i should make the point that i know bog all about the TD, but from what i've read on here the constant cranking could be crank sensor related, but its worth paper clipping, if it works on yours, for fault codes. Could also be a number of other things as well though, i guess? Anyone?

Re starter not turning....immobizer? Does the light for it on the dash go out?

Just thoughts i'm afraid, no experience of you model, but your slipping down the board so.....bump. :-)

imobiliser seems ok. i,m not 100% sure but if the s/m bendix is not engaging and spinning the flywheel could this be the prob. thats what it sounds like when i try to turn the engine.  :)

I have had no end of hot starting issues on my tractor, I have changed the battery and starter motor (I managed to burn that out last year), both of which appeared to sort the problem for a short time...

I have come across that the Range Rover that uses the same BMW engine also has a hot start issue...

Further searching and scouring led me to a modified ignition relay that foold the engine into thinking it is starting cold and reverts to actual engine conditions after a few seconds of engine run-time.

I haven't tried the modified relay, but, is something that I have kept meaning to investigate further...

Hope it helps...

I have seen that chipping can help, but, it didn't with mine, but then my chip was a cheapie off Ebay... lol...

This thread http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1254488572/0#0 seemed to come to the conclusion that a little gizmo that forces a cold start even when the engine is hot does solve the problem.

Other people have changed a temperature sensor in the fuel injection pump.

Others have changed the fuel injection pump (sounds expensive)
