Autobox Oil cooler...
« on: 16 October 2009, 15:31:11 »

Seen these on ebay quite often. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170263840818

What models were they fitted to? My Gearbox oil cooler is inside the radiator, which I assumed was the norm?

Is there any advantages /disadvantages to an external oil cooler?

Reason I’m asking is my mig is starting to run on the hot side (radiator is blocked – found out when I put the caravan on the back a few weeks back! :-[). I noticed that the gearbox oil cooler must block 50% of the radiator inlet/outlet at least? Surely that cant be good for the water flow?  :-?

Would I be better fitting a new radiator without the internal oil cooler, and an external gearbox oil cooler?

2.6 / 3.2s have a separate cooler in front of the rad.

TBH, if you're having cooling problems that weren't there before the fault is not a fundamental design issue like this so a decent replacement radiator is all you need.

I would say any increase in efficiency of the radiator would be balanced by a decrease due to the oil cooler in front of it.

Been there done that with the TD - 1st day of ownership infact! Pump fell to bits on the way home... 100+ miles away too on the M6 :'(

Had to pull trousers down at the roadside and join The AA :( Thank god I had my debit card with me! :o

If the external oil cooler is on the newer 2.6 + 3.2's does that not suggest that the latter is the better improved option?

Either way, I need a new radiator...

Now do I go genuine GM or get one from ebay / motor factors?  :-/

Oil cooler, on other marques i've seen, not unknown to block, meaning new rad. Seperate cooler easier to change/flush.... possibly? Either way dont think there is a cooling issue to worry about tbh.

am i right in assuming that certain omegas (td's i think)  had a seperate oil cooler in one of the front wings!!!!!!

I seem to recall a friend got hold of one from a scrapped omega and fitted it to his 3.0 petrol to aid gearbox oil cooling while towing think they are fitted in the drivers wheel arch i shall try get hold of him and ask
