Apparently they are pretty bad

Just found 2 tyres 245/45/17's with 5mm of tread for £20 the pair! Is it okay to have wider on the back then the front?

Could it be an ABS speed sensor as the speedo is tempramental?

That sounds as though it could be your ABS ECU a common problem with cars circa 98. What year is yours?  Do a search on the forum for ABS,speedo, heavy steering. You don't necessarily get all those and it isn't always the ECU. If it is the ECU there is a how to guide.
