Turbos should only make a low pitch soft brief whistle when put under load.
loud turbos are broke check air intake at manifoid (after turbo)for excess oil.
personaly i'd change it :y

Remove the elbow hose, and grip the spindle nut between your fingers.
If you can feel noticeable movement, then the spindle bearings are shot. Also, try spinning the blades, there should be no roughness when rotated. Another dead giveaway are visible metallic deposits when the elbow's removed. Any or all of these symptoms mean a replacement turbo.

there was a post a while ago(think it was turk) who snapped his intake manifold on refitting of it. iirc that made a high pitch screeching sound.

Aye, I seem to recall this too.
Could the screeching noise be being mistaken for a high-pitched whistling sound. Or, could even be a split on the induction side, or an obstructed air filter.
