Chips away and other such mobile paint companies
« on: 16 December 2009, 08:03:05 »

Anyone used any of these types of company to tidy up rusty rear wheelarches, and if so which would you recommend (I have a pair of rusty rear arches that look like it's just surface rust/paint bubbling, although theres a bit on the drivers door as well).

Thanks

would do it your self if only small jobs, make sure you get the paint code of the vin plate on front of enging bay, clean of the paint ( and rust), use some filler and smoth off with a bit of emery cloth smoth down as rust make pits in metal, use the correct base coat for you colour leave to dry, then apply the colour of your car, heat up paint with an hair dryer to help paint set and match your colour, then leave for about half hour and then T-cut hole area even on the original paint should match in, has worked when ive dun it my self.

Would of thought you would have to get rid of the rust, or it will come back. Would take more than chips away!!! ;D

It was more the spraying quality, than the rust removal I was interested in.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear :(

I used Chips Away and a few others too. The paint colour did not match and the chips looked like raised measel bumps afterwards. They said it would settle down in week or so. B*******ks!
Freekin expensive too.
Have a go yourself - a bit of assist from the help section and a bit of practice on paper should see you ok.
Save a lot of quids too!

You need to get rid off as much rust as posible or its going to come back and haunt you.

Get rid of what you can including all the flakey bits, use plenty of Trusin or something simular, paint some red oxide primer afterwards (all best done in the dry and warm), fill it then rub down to shape, if any rust or bare metal sharts to show through when rubbing down use more red oxide primer and repeat untill all covered.

Finish of with paint primer, prepare then spray top coat a few times, this time of year I would leave the Top Coats a good week before wet dry and finishing.

You need to get rid of ALL rust, or it will soon come back.

I wouldn't advise anyone to take on the job of painting a car without some experience , a bad paint job is much worse than a bit of rust to my eyes.
