Battery light on 2.2 DTi
« on: 17 December 2009, 20:00:16 »

Hi chaps,

While driving this evening the battery light has come on and stayed on on my 2001 2.2 DTi Elite saloon.

Voltage across the terminals is within tolerances mentioned on this forum with engine off (12.8v), at idle (13.8v) and under load (13.6v). There is no real variation in voltage so the alternator appears to be outputting a steadyish current.

It is a steady light (no flickering) and none of the electrical systems or instruments have failed.

No other symptoms - just the light is on.

Can anyone tell me exactly where the relevant earth points are?

Would this symptom point to just a blown fuse?

Anything I should check?

Thanks for your help.

I'll add that the belt looks fine.

The only standard earth is located below the battery carrier - this can cause problems so other earth braids are often contected direct to the car body from the battery and between the body and the engine, the more the better, also check both battery contentors.
P.S. have the alternator checked under load.

Hi - thanks.

There is a secondary earth added by an electrician last year so I'm thinking it's not that.

When you say have it checked under load, by who and how? I have checked the voltage across the battery off and under load and they are within the ranges that posts on here indicate are correct.

Did you mean battery connectors? I don't know what a contentor is - I'm not that mechanically minded to be honest.

Anyone have any other ideas????

I've been told it could be the diode pack in the alternator. Thoughts?

Thanks for any help. Very much appreciated.

It could be the secondary diode pack in the alternator....unlikely to be the main one as the charge voltage will be lower
